Serving schools, children & adults
We kicked off the new year by diving into the world of Mindful Farming and Composting with an amazing group of kindergartners, teachers and PTO volunteers from Chickering Elementary in Dover, MA! These young farmers used their imaginations and breaths to prepare their land, plant their seeds and breathe life into their crops. Once our minds and bodies were settled, we began our compost journey and engaged our senses to:
· identify the varying colors of soil and decomposing leaves,
· smell the sweetness of soil, leaves, and pine needles; and,
· feel the varying textures of the natural materials.
Together we learned about the different soil horizons, decomposition process, compost critters, and the valuable nutrients compost provides plants. We then set up a classroom experiment to test out what is and is not compostable! In March, the Mindful Squirrel will return to view the experiment results and lead the Chickering Farmers through an afternoon of being a Mindful Worm! In May we’ll close our Mindful Farmers series by becoming Mindful Flowers.
